During the second half of the 19th century, several wine merchants established in Abaújszántó. Amongst them, the Zimmermann family was one of the most active, with their winery founded in 1856. They played a significant role in maintaining the fame of Tokaji on the world market in the wake of the phylloxera crisis. Around 1900, Zimmermann Lipót & Sons owned the area´s largest winery with 60 hectares of vineyards and sixty wine cellars, and had sales offices in Budapest, Katowice, Berlin, London and New York. Their wines received several awards and universal recognition. In 1892 the Tokaji Aszú received a gold medal at the International Wine Exhibition in Berlin.
